For the past few months, Preston has been pretty sick with ear infection after ear infection. At his 15 month checkup, his doctor asked me all the developmental questions and he was doing them all except for saying a few words. His doctor said by now he should be at least saying 2-3 words regularly like Dada and Bye-Bye. I told her that just that week he had started to say uh-oh but that was about it. He speaks gibberish all day long but he wasn't speaking any words that meant anything. We both concluded that he was probably having a difficult time hearing because of all the ear infections so she wanted me to go see a ENT doctor that day to get his hearing tested.
Brent came with me to the ENT appointment and Preston passed the hearing booth test although there was 1 pitch/sound that he didn't respond to but the nurse said his ear drums were fine and he responded very well to the pitch/sounds in the sound booth. We then met with the ENT doctor who looked in his ear and said he was developing yet another ear infection and more than likely this whole time he has been hearing muffled sounds because of the imbalanced pressure in his ear. He suggested that Preston get ear tubes and we agreed.
We had to wait about a week to finally get Preston in but the time finally came early Thursday on the morning of May 9. I was worried that Preston was going to be really cranky in the morning because he wasn't allowed to have any food or milk when he woke up but he did surprisingly well. John and Kathy met us at the hospital to lend their support.
We didn't have to wait long and they came to get us to take Preston back to prep for surgery. They gave Preston some medicine to help him relax and while we waited on the doctor, Preston had a good time playing on the hospital bed.

The loopy medicine is finally kicking in
The doctor met with us and then took our little guy back for surgery. I knew it wasn't a long procedure so I did pretty good when they took him back. We got to wait with John and Kathy and before we knew it, the doctor came to meet us and said everything went well. He cleaned out some of the ear infection that Preston had but told us to give him ear drops twice a day for the next 5 days. Finally I got to see Preston and I wasn't prepared for what I saw. He had moist/dry blood all in his ears and was crying hysterically. It took him about 20 minutes to calm down as he was coming off the sleeping gas. He drank a full cup of water and apple juice and just as we were walking out to go home, Preston threw up all over me 3 times. It didn't bother me one bit, I just wanted my little guy to feel better as soon as possible.
We said good-bye to John and Kathy and then took Preston home to recover. We couldn't feed him anything for about an hour so Brent and I took him for a walk in his stroller all over the neighborhood. When we got back home, we offered him some food and he scarfed down a whole banana, fruit bar and milk.
By this time, Preston was feeling back to normal and he ended up taking a long nap and then got to see my family that evening for our Mother's Day dinner at Olive Garden. Mal had a surprise for him and brought him an Elmo balloon and new computer toy for being so brave.
About 3 days afterwards, Preston started to say Bye-Bye and we still don't know if he is saying Dada yet or not but we are thrilled that he is finally saying Bye-Bye all the time.
4 days after his surgery, Preston started to get green eye discharge and his eyes were very puffy and red underneath. So I called his doctor to get him checked out and she said he was still battling the ear infection and that was the cause of the eye discharge. She prescribed an antibiotic to help clear everything up but we are 6 days into the 10 day run of the medicine and he isn't getting any better. He has been cranky and fussy everyday, he has developed a bad cough and his eyes are still draining and stiff puffy. If he isn't better by the end of the 10 days, I'm taking him back to get rechecked.
It has been breaking my heart everyday to see my little boy so sick and all I want to do is trade places with him so he can feel better.
Hopefully we will be able to get a grip on all this and he can begin to feel better very soon. Poor guy hasn't been completely well in a few months.
